Motivating Students
Facing the reality of a classroom environment can be quite formidable for a new student. When purposeful intervention is enlisted for the unmotivated student, it must be focus on uplifting the student from the doldrums of learning despair and setting him/her on gaining a new interest in achieving. Students are not unmotivated to learn, it depends on the settings they are in. It is important for students to understand that they have strengths and weaknesses in different areas and these they should be encouraged to work at.
Creating an active leaning classroom environment is important. Students should be encouraged to do evaluation and give feedback on classroom sessions regularly, so that teachers can find out how well they are reaching their students. Having a positive relationship with students will also bring a feeling of warmth to the classroom atmosphere. The deepest hunger in humans is the desire to be appreciated. (William James 19th, 20th century) Teachers need to give reassurance to low achieving students, encouraging them to meet their goals and ambitions. However, they need to understand that they need to take responsibility in order to progress. Guidance should be given in setting goals for learning. For students experiencing the failure syndrome, the cognitive retaining method is recommended. The students are the future, so in reaching them and helping them to achieve, this will help in the uplifting of the world. A healthy student is a motivated one. When the student is motivated it will inspire them to push higher. In the end the power behind development is life. (Erik Erickson 20th century)
